Nisswa has the characteristic uniqueness of being a city that has been developed around a lake. The city was brought into existence because of the immense popularity of the Gull Lake present in this area, which brings in a lot of natives as well as tourists into this city each year. Today, Nisswa is one of the major hubs of tourism within Minnesota.

Location

Nisswa is located within the Crow Wing County in Minnesota, and is situated within the Micropolitan Statistical Area of Brainerd. The city area of Brainerd is situated to the south of Nisswa.

Importance

Nisswa is a small city with little significance other than its bustling tourism industry. The tourism industry is mainly because of the Gull Lake which provides several amenities and entertainment options to the visiting tourists. The roots of the name hark back to the Ojibew word nessawae, which represents “three” or “in the middle”. Today, tourists can check out various relics of the ancient Indian culture in many parts of Nisswa.

Nisswa has also importance because of its central location in Minnesota. Though it is not an important commercial center itself, its central location places it as an important transport hub for the entire region of Minnesota.

Size and Population

The area of Nisswa is 18.4 square miles in extent. More than 7 square miles of the area is occupied by water which is in the form of the various lakes, including the Gull Lake. The maximum density of population is situated in the areas where the water is present, which accounts for roughly 45% of the total area of the city. It has an elevation of 1,230 feet.

The population of Nisswa is a mere 1,953. However, at any given time, except in the winter, you can be sure of finding a lot more people here than this number because there are always a large number of tourists present here because of the various lakes.

Attractions

The most important attraction in Nisswa is the Gull Lake, which is a 38 mile shoreline lake present in and around the city. The lake is a premier fishing spot with a large population of bass, pan fish, northern pike and walleye among other species. People can hire boats and go fishing on these lakes. They can plan out single person holidays or can even take a small group of people such as their family with them. For big groups of people, the cruises are extremely popular options. These cruises will also take small groups of people, but they often specialize in taking up to a hundred people at a time.

This area has a lot of golfing action too. Many resorts have their own golf courses, which see a lot of returning tourists year after year. The golf courses have instructors so that amateurs can also enjoy the game of golf along with the various professionals that can be found on these courses. Tennis is another sport that is played to a large extent in Nisswa.
